My friend Gabe has finally gotten around to open sourcing his very cool Flickr based screensaver called slickr. If you have windows you really must install this thing at least once.
As might be inferred from the name - this particular screensaver uses the Flickr web service api to fetch images for displaying on your monitor. (or dual monitors, it works with however many you have - each with its own independently cycled set of images) The default setting is to display the most “interesting” photos on Flickr - ie those that you see when you first hit the site - but it can be configured a multitude of ways (including viewing your normallly privately labeled Flickr photos if you had a reason for doing that) that can make for some interesting party games..
My favorite game is usually “guess what my filter was” - you’d be surprised what you can find on Flickr with the appropriate keyword filter.
Don’t have windows? Fear not! There is also the predeccessor to slickr - RandomWeb. This one doesn’t use the Flickr services to fetch images but instead grabs them from bunches of places - with the original place being images.google.com . (which was also preceded by the original perl script to fetch google images in linux via our mutual friend Alex )
So who is going to be the first to make a proper port to gtk / Gnome? (no I don’t have time, well…..if no one does it soon I may but I’d rather not )
